This is the public home page for MTHSC 106, Sections 18 and 19. These sections are being taught by Professor Daniel D. Warner, and Ms. Erin K. McNelis. These sections are special sections which are designed for majors in the Life Sciences as well as majors in Math and Science Education.
These sections have two particular features which distinguish them from all other sections of MTHSC 106.
- First, all the students will be required to purchase a Cassiopeia A21 palmtop computer with Maple. Maple is one of the most advanced Computer Algebra Systems available, and it is widely used in business, industry, and research. Through special arrangements with Casio Inc., these Cassiopeias are being made availble at a price close to the price of the typical graphing calculator required in the other sections of MTHC 106. This represents a 60% discount from the standard education price. The offer is only available to students enrolled in Sections 18 and 19 of MTHSC 106.
- Second, both sections will use a newly revised version of the textbook, Calculus: Mathematics and Modeling with Maple. This textbook takes a very modern approach to calculus, which de-emphasizes the development of rote skills (which computers do better than people anyway) and emphasizes the application of calculus to dynamic real world problems. Particular attention will be paid to modeling and problem formulation. The revised version of the text includes detailed instructions on using Maple on the Cassiopeia to solve problems in Calculus. Preliminary versions of this book will be available through the University Bookstore.
All class notes and resources for the course are hosted on the course's WebCT site. Copies of the syllabus and the Maple worksheets are also stored in this public site.

Handouts
A detailed Maple supplement for the textbook is available online. It includes all the examples in the book and occasional exercises. The supplement can be viewed as a series of web pages, CMMM.html, or as a downloadable Maple worksheet, CMMM.mws. The Maple worksheet requires that Maple is available on the computer and that it has been listed as a helper application in the web browser. This is the case for all the computers in the public labs.
