Early Stage Design Representation and Reasoning

Early Stage Design Representation and Reasoning

Early stages of engineering design, such as problem definition and conceptual design, are where 70% of the product cost is determined and where the solution is mostly defined.  However, these stages are supported by few tools.  To start to fill this gap, we have focused on early stage representations such as requirements and functions, formalizing each and developing reasoning support.  To better inform these efforts, we have conducted experiments in many forms to understand how designers interact with these representations.
