Frequently Asked Questions
What major should I be coming from?
We invite any student with a STEM background (broadly defined) to apply.
Students from many disciplines contribute to solving problems at the intersection of humans, systems, and analytics.
These could include operations research, industrial engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, human-centered computing, and others.
I’m a foreign student. Am I eligible?
Unfortunately due to NSF program requirements, only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to participate in the REU.
However, international students are valued members of the research community, and we invite you to apply to the Clemson IE graduate programs, where students from any country are eligible. More information is available here.
I’m graduating this spring. Am I eligible?
Unfortunately, participants must be an undergraduate student at the time of their participation in the program (e.g., rising juniors or seniors).
What if I’m not an industrial engineering student?
Totally fine! We invite any STEM major to apply.
May I apply if I am a current Clemson student?
The goal of this program is to bring students from across the country, and therefore the number of Clemson students who will be selected to participate will be limited.
Clemson also has fantastic programs for Clemson undergraduates to conduct research. including during the summers. For more information, please visit the Creative Inquiry site.
What if I have other questions about eligibility?
We would be happy to answer them. Please reach out to our team at IEHCORE[at]clemson.edu.
Do I have to pay for housing out of my $7,000 stipend?
Nope! Your housing will already be covered separately. The $7,000 stipend is intended to cover other living expenses (e.g., food) as well as be compensation for the research you will conduct.
Can I start or end the program early?
To maximize the REU experience, the program activities will run May 19 – July 25, 2025. If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact us at IEHCORE[at]clemson.edu.
How can I apply?
You can apply through the official NSF REU portal, ETAP: https://etap.nsf.gov/award/7316/opportunity/9803. The application is now open! Be sure to apply by the deadline: February 1, 2025.
