{"id":117,"date":"2025-10-03T16:33:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T20:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cecas.clemson.edu\/rtpace\/?page_id=117"},"modified":"2026-02-25T10:52:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T15:52:07","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cecas.clemson.edu\/rtpace\/","title":{"rendered":"RTPACE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Welcome to Dr. Brahma\u2019s Real Time Protection And Control of Energy systems (RTPACE) Research Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our research spans diverse areas of electrical engineering and computer science, integrating signal processing, machine learning, control, and communication to holistically approach emerging problems in the power and energy domain. The current focus is on creating new paradigms in power system protection, as well as the analytics that underpin  protection in presence of renewable and storage integrated power systems, at both transmission and distribution levels. The lab has gold-standard validation facilities in both software and hardware as described below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Real Time Digital Simulator<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtds.com\/\">NovaCor<\/a> with 7 enabled cores), along with <strong>SEL Inc numerical relays<\/strong> (every protection function is covered by this suite of relays) and Omicron amplifier that enables HIL testing of relays and hardware developed by our students. The capability enables high-fidelity time-domain simulation and testing of energy systems with inverter based resources (IBRs). This facility is also used as laboratory for students taking Dr. Brahma&#8217;s Protection classes. Two classes are offered &#8211; one as UG elective course and other as a graduate course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educational and Professional versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pscad.com\/\"><strong>PSCAD<\/strong><\/a> for time-domain simulations of power systems of any size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two hardware racks with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens.com\/en-us\/products\/siprotec\/\">SIPROTEC<\/a> multifunctional relays<\/strong> from Siemens along with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens.com\/en-us\/products\/siprotec\/digsi-5\/\">DIGSI<\/a> software interface to test protection schemes using different functionalities of these relays in phasor domain. This is mainly used for education purpose in course projects assigned in Dr. Brahma&#8217;s protection classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry grade Gridscale\u00a0X<sup>TM<\/sup>\u00a0<strong>Advanced Protection Assessment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens.com\/en-us\/products\/gridscale-x\/advanced-protection-assessment\/\">APA<\/a>)<\/strong> software platform, formerly known as PSS\u00aeCAPE,
