Others complete calculus in high school, but nonetheless place into courses below calculus at the start of college. Still others do not attempt calculus in high school. In South Carolina, there is a signi\ufb01cant racial and socioeconomic disparity between engineering students who place below calculus and those who enter college calculus-ready.<\/p>\n<p>Narrowing that gap and broadening participation in engineering by reducing attrition rates along the precalculus pathway to an engineering degree requires that the secondary schools, two-year colleges, and four-year colleges work together to identify barriers and to develop coordinated action plans for surmounting those barriers.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_2 1_2 fusion-one-half fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;width:50%;width:calc(50% - ( ( 4% ) * 0.5 ) );\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>The Workshop on Reducing Attrition in Precalculus Pathways to Engineering Degrees (WRAPPED) brings together action teams of three people from each of 30 secondary and post-secondary institutions across South Carolina for a two-day workshop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WRAPPED is designed to meet three goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify factors that affect initial college mathematics placement for engineering-intending students in South Carolina.<\/li>\n<li>Build cross-institutional collaborations both within and across educational levels.<\/li>\n<li>Develop speci\ufb01c implementation plans for addressing a single barrier at multiple institutions within an educational level or across multiple levels.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:4%;--awb-padding-right:5%;--awb-padding-bottom:2%;--awb-padding-left:5%;--awb-background-color:#c12f4d;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-center fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-bottom:15px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-center\" style=\"margin:0;\">Results of WRAPPED<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-4 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"--awb-margin-bottom:15px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;\"><h3 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\"><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Results of WRAPPED include speci\ufb01c implementation plans for pilot interventions across the state as well as a better understanding of the barriers to engineering success as perceived by faculty, sta\ufb00, and administrators who are deeply engaged with the precalculus engineering population. Dr. Atamturktur Russcher is a professor of environmental engineering and earth sciences, professor of mechanical engineering, professor of industrial engineering, and professor of civil engineering. Her research, focused on uncertainty quantification in scientific computing, has been documented in over 100 peer-reviewed publications in some of the finest engineering science journals. Dr. Atamturktur Russcher\u2019s research has received funding from several federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Department of the Interior, Department of Transportation, the Department of Education, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as industry organizations and partners, such as the National Masonry Concrete Association and Nucor. She serves as the director of the National Science Foundation-funded Tigers ADVANCE project, which focuses on improving the status of women and minority faculty at Clemson.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Dr. Atamturktur is the director of the National Science Foundation-funded National Research Traineeship project at Clemson, with funding for over 30 doctoral students and a goal of initiating a new degree program on scientific computing and data analytics. Dr. Atamturktur is also the director of a Department of Education-funded Graduate Assistantship in Areas of National Need project that provides funding for 10 doctoral students. Dr. Atamturktur is one of the four co-directors of Clemson\u2019s Center of Excellence in Next Generation Computing and Creativity. She is also employed as a theatre technician at the Brooks Center for Performing Arts and work with sound boards, prop set up and special effects equipment for performances.
