Grad School 101 (Sept. 7th)

This seminar will cover topics ranging from the benefits to attending graduate school, why research experience is important, the difference between a thesis and non-thesis MS program, how to fund graduate school and the application process.  We will also discuss options for how to fund graduate school.  Most students will not have the same financial support for graduate school as they did as undergraduates.

Applying to Graduate School and Funding Mechanisms (Sept. 14th)

Come to this seminar to figure out the nuts and bolts of applying to graduate school.  We will also discuss options for how to fund graduate school.  Most students will not have the same financial support for graduate school as they did as undergraduates.

Applying for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (Sept. 21st)

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) focused on developing a workforce of scientists and engineers in the United States. Recipients of these fellowships can receive up to three years of financial support (annual stipend of $37,000 and tuition). This seminar will provide an overview of the program and application components.

Writing a fellowship proposal research statement:  How to get started (Sept. 28th)

Fellowships allow students to define the research projects in graduate school.  These fellowships typically require that students craft a short research statement.  While this program will focus on the NDSEG Fellowship application package, it can be used to develop applications for other fellowships such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.

Writing a personal statement:  Impacting and convincing the reviewers (Oct. 5th)

Many fellowships that can be used to pay for graduate school should be applied for while students are still undergraduates.  These fellowships require that students craft a personal statement.  This seminar highlights key aspects of an effective personal statement.

How to get good letters of recommendation (Oct. 12th)

Letters of recommendation are critical for applying for graduate school, fellowships, and research positions.  This seminar talks about how to ensure that letters are strong.

Finding the right advisor and getting a mentor (Oct. 19th)

An advisor does more than just sign paperwork and look at your data.  Finding the person who can help you research your goals and provide guidance during your research journey is key to beginning your research career.

Importance of networking early (Oct. 26th)

Networking is more than just shaking hands with strangers.  It is making meaningful connections with future collaborators, mentors and colleagues.
