Advanced Computational Mechanics Lab Graduate Student Prapot Kunthong selected as Finalist for the 16th Annual Robert J. Melosh Medal Competition

Prapot Kunthong, a Clemson University Graduate Student presented his research on "An Efficient Solver for High-Order Accurate Time-Discontinuous Galerkin (TDG) Methods for Second-Order Hyperbolic Systems", as one of six finalists for the 16th Annual Robert J. Melosh Medal Competition for the best student paper on Finite Element Analysis. Year 2004.

Prapot Kunthong is a Ph.D. candidate in the Civil Engineering Department. His faculty advisor is Subhash Anand, Professor of Civil Engineering. His research advisor is Lonny Thompson, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

The Competition was conducted in two phases. Initially, extended abstracts were reviewed by a panel of distinguished researchers in computational mechanics, and the top six papers selected as finalists. The students then attended a symposium at the University of California, Berkely, on March 22, 2004. The symposium featured lectures by the members of the distinguished judging panel, as well as presentations by all selected finalists. The winner of the Competition, J. Pontaza, of Texas A&M University, received the Robert J. Melosh Medal and a $500 honorarium.

The Finalists:

  • Ruben Juanes, Stanford University
  • Prapot Kunthong, Clemson University
  • Gang Li, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Juan Pontaza, Texas A&M University
  • Alireza Tabarraei, University of California, Davis
  • Prashanth Vijalapura, University of California, Berkeley

The Judges:

  • Dr. David Fox, ABAQUS, Inc.
  • Dr. Martin Heinstein, Sandia National Laboratories
  • Professor Peter M. Pinsky, Stanford University
