Student Spotlight

December 15, 2021: Saketh Jella received a travel grant to attend the 12th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (12NCEE) in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 27-July 1, 2022.

These grants are generously funded by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI), and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) to students and early-career academics and professionals to defray costs for attending the 12th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering. November 16, 2021: Saketh Jella received Graduate Travel Grant (GTG) from Clemson University Graduate Student Government to attend the GeoCongress 2022 Conference in Charlotte, NC, March 20-23, 2022.

Graduate Travel Grants are awarded by Graduate Student Government as a reimbursement that supports graduate students’ travel to the conference, workshops, and field experience. The grant beneficiaries are selected based on the ability of the student to convince peer-reviewers that the event they are attending is worthwhile.

November 1, 2021: Zakia Tasnim received Glenn Teaching Fellowship for Spring 2022

This fellowship is designed to meet two goals: 1) improve the marketability of our PhD graduates desiring a career in academics and 2) improve the level of instruction in undergraduate courses.

July 21, 2021: Siddharth Marathe received the DFI Educational Trust’s At Large scholarship.

July 13, 2021: Tharshikka Vickneswaran was elected to serve on the Geo-institute
EDS (Embankments Dams Slopes) technical committee.

EDS is one of the technical committee in Geo-institute. Technical committees focus on unique technical areas within the geo-industry and encompass all major technical disciplines within geotechnical engineering and the geoprofession.

July 06, 2021: Tharshikka Vickneswaran received the Doctoral Dissertation Completion Grant.

May 29, 2021: Vishnu Saketh Jella (Co-Recipient) Received Aniket Shrikhande Memorial Annual Graduate Fellowship.

Congratulations to Vishnu Saketh Jella, co-recipient of the Aniket Shrikhande Memorial Annual Graduate Fellowship in Geotechnical Engineering. This award was established in memory of Aniket Shrikhande, a graduate of the M.S. program. The fellowship is awarded to the “most outstanding current graduate student” who is pursuing their graduate education in geotechnical engineering.

Saketh, a native of Hyderabad, India, is a Ph.D. student in geotechnical engineering. After graduation, Saketh plans to work in the industry to gain hands-on field and industry experience and perform research in geotechnical earthquake engineering. His advisors are Dr. Nadarajah Ravichandran and Dr. Ronald Andrus.

Zakia, a native of Dhaka, Bangladesh is a Ph.D. student in Geotechnical Engineering. After graduation, Zakia plans to work in the academia to apply her educational background to research and advanced applications. She wants to enlighten her students with her expertise and help them achieve their goals. Her advisor is Dr. Qiushi Chen.

April 29, 2021: Camilius Amevorku Received Outstanding Graduate Lab Assistant for Spring 2021 (based on student’s survey)

Congratulations to Camilius Amevorku, recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Lab Assistant. This award was established in 2006 and is awarded to the outstanding graduate lab assistant in civil engineering.  The selection of the recipients is the responsibility of the Graduate Program Committee and is based on the student assessment of lab instructors.

Camilius, a native of Keta, Ghana, is a Ph.D. student in geotechnical engineering. After graduation, Camilius plans to work in the industry to gain hands-on field experience. He later plans to venture into academia where he will apply his educational background and industry experience to research and advanced applications. His advisors are Dr. Ronald Andrus and Dr. Nadarajah Ravichandran.

May 13, 2020: Camilius Amevorku Appointed as a Pioneering Member to Serve on the Civil Engineering Graduate Student Advisory Board.

The Civil Engineering Graduate Student Advisory Board was established to bridge the gap between faculty and graduate students in order to facilitate more cordiality among them and make it easy for the concerns of students to be voiced and heard.

Tharshikka’s hometown is Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. She is completing her M.S. in geotechnical engineering in May, and will resume her Ph.D. studies this summer as part of the M.S. en route to Ph.D. program. After graduation, Tharshikka plans to pursue a career in academia, with hopes of one day becoming a professor. Her advisor is Dr. Nadarajah Ravichandran.

January 24, 2020: Tharshikka Vickneswaran Received Civil Engineering Department’s David Rozendale Travel Grant.

Congratulations to Tharshikka Vickneswaran for being the recipient of  Rozendale Travel Grant for the current academic year. This award is given by the Civil Engineering Department to PhD students to support travel to conferences. The preference is given to international conference, first-time presenters, and/or those conferences that will provide significant opportunities for networking and outreach.

March 9, 2019: Vahidreza Mahmoudabadi Received the 2018 Best Paper Award from the Journal of GeoEngineering.
