Pillar Helix

For a recent National Science Foundation (NSF) proposal written with Sapna Sarupria, Scott Husson, and Ilenia Battiato, we envisioned a research process with five steps. The steps repeat in a cyclical manner, but with each cycle the level of complexity increases. We spent some time trying to create a visual diagram of this process, and we came up with a helix moving through five pillars.

Below is a movie rendered in AutoCAD 2013 that shows the pillar helix in motion.

I also uploaded the model to the Sketchfab website. The embedded viewer is below, where you can move the model around in 3D space. Unfortunately, with 4,800 faces and 2,400 vertices, the rendering is slow and will take up some processor power on your computer. We’ll have to learn how to optimize that.
