Lonny L. Thompson

Biography:

  • Teaching Interests: Computational Engineering & Mechanics
  • Research Interests: Computational Engineering & Mechanics;
    acoustics, structural dynamics and vibrations, noise control, nonlinear waves, inverse problems, structural optimization & design, non-Newtonian flows, interface tracing, finite element, meshfree, discontinuous-Galerkin, stabilized methods, adaptive methods, visualization, high performance computing, parallel & distributed computing, lightweight engineering for automotive systems.

Lonny L. Thompson is Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Clemson University (since 1994). He obtained his MS and PhD degrees from Stanford University (1989,1994). Prior to earning his graduate degrees, he held a position as structural engineer at General Dynamics Space Systems Division designing the interface structure between the Titan and Centaur launch vehicles. In 1997 he received the NSF Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers -- the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers. He is the author of book chapters (on computational acoustics), and has written more than 70 research papers on numerical methods and on applications in structural acoustics and vehicle structures. His research interests are diverse and include topics in computational mathematics and engineering. His current research thrusts include multiscale and nonlinear waves and lightweight engineering for automotive systems. He has graduated 5 PhD students and more than a dozen MS students. He also advised 6 undergraduate student research projects. He is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United States Association of Computational Mechanics, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Acoustical Society of America. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Noise Control & Acoustics Division of ASME, and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

Dr. Thompson's research group develops advanced computational and modeling methods for the numerical prediction and understanding of the physical behavior of complex, and multi-scale waves in structures and fluids, and their interaction. Applications include acoustic radiation and scattering from elastic structures including ship and automotive systems, and ultrasound for biomedical treatments and detection.
