Getting Started
The Machine Shop is open to all Majors. In order to gain full shop access, you must obtain a shop pass and complete all certifications. Each certification will grant you access to a new set of machines. A full description of the machines available can be found on the resources page.
Obtaining a Shop Pass
A shop pass will provide you with access to all tools located in the shop supervisor’s office. To obtain a shop pass, watch the shop tour video. Then, come at any time during shop hours to take a tour with the supervisor on duty. You will then take a quiz and, upon answering 100% of the questions correctly, you will be issued a shop pass.
Note: this shop pass must be worn at all times while in the lab.
Obtaining Further Certifications
Each certification requires you to make a part used for a specific function in machining. Before coming to the shop, watch each required video for the certification. When you arrive at the shop, you will receive a walk-through of the specific machines and take a quiz on the information provided. Machininig materials will then be provided to begin fabrication of the part. While making the part, you will practice techniques pertaining to the set of machines covered by the certification. Part drawings for each certification can be found below as well as within the display cabinet in front of the supervisor’s office. The certifications and the machines they cover are as follows:
GREEN: Drill Presses, Electric Drills, Band Saws, and Sanders (watch two videos here).
BLUE: Mills, Lathes, and Bench Grinder (watch two videos here).
ORANGE: MIG Welder, Plasma Cutter, and Angle Grinders (watch video here).
ADDITIONAL TOOLS: A WaterJet and CNC machine are available to use after obtaining training. Stop by the shop today to get started!
If a student wishes to complete the orange certification before the blue certification, that is allowed. However, the shop pass and the green certification are pre-requisites for both blue and orange.
