Dr. Ladner presented “Energy assessment at water resource recovery facilities” at the 2021 South Carolina Environmental Conference in Myrtle Beach on August 9th, 2021. A key component of the presentation was a list of six example recommendations for energy reduction: (1) Utilize existing tank capacity for solids storage to reduce truckload frequency, (2) Replace surface aerators with fine-bubble diffusers, (3) Automate aeration equipment using a dissolved oxygen probe, (4) Switch to anammox to treat digester effluent, (5) Install VFDs for motors, and (6) Employ peracetic acid to decrease disinfection energy costs.
