Zanmi Lasante is currently reliant on the Haitian grid, which can be unreliable with frequent power outages, and a diesel generator, which is expensive for its electricity. In order to address the inconsistent and expensive electricity, our mission as the hydropower group is to develop a reliable, consistent, and safe source of power for Cange by using the water pressure from the nearby spring. The scope of the project includes all aspects to ensure long-term reliable power for Cange: designing and installing the system that converts water flow to electricity, building a structure to protect all the equipment from the weather, improving energy usage in Cange to ensure that the system can safely provide the right amount of energy, and creating a plan for community ownership. This will include maintenance practices to upkeep all equipment and ensure both community members’ safety and the long-term sustainability of the system.
