From artificial intelligence to autonomous vehicles, students, faculty and staff in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences are working on the cutting-edge in a wide range of fields. The college’s alumni are crucial to making it possible.
Many have offered both time and treasure, helping ensure students, faculty and staff have the knowledge and resources they need to succeed.
In recent months, IDEAS has interviewed several alumni who have chosen to give back to the college. Their inspirational stories show the lasting impact Clemson has had on their lives, why they chose to donate and the heights that can be reached with a Clemson degree.
Learn more about Gaye and Joel Sprague, Martin and Linda Lightsey and Patrick and Carey Jansen in their stories below. Each of their donations addressed a critical need within the college, helping support underrepresented groups, budding entrepreneurs and students in need of mentors.

Gaye and Joel Sprague honored their late son’s memory by establishing the Benjamin Garrison Sprague Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Family and friends of the Spragues have generously donated to the endowment. Scholarships support civil engineering majors who are from groups underrepresented in the field.
Martin and Linda Lightsey established the Martin and Linda Lightsey Engineering and Entrepreneurship Endowment. Proceeds provide scholarships for engineering majors who are also members of The Design and Entrepreneurship Network. The Lightseys have also generously supported the Clemson University Makerspace.
Patrick and Carey Jansen helped create Jansen Family Emerging Scholars, a program that brings together mechanical engineering students. The students who are further along in the major serve as mentors to those who are less experienced, helping stem attrition while maintaining the curriculum’s rigor.
