P2 Grantees in Action

Region 8’s Pollution Prevention (P2) Program through its State and Tribal grantee partners helps businesses and universities create systems that support not only P2, but also innovation in times of crisis. Simms Fishing Products (Simms) of Bozeman, Montana is one example. Simms has received the Governor of Montana’s EcoStar Award, administered by P2 grantee Montana State University (MSU), for the past 3 years. Selection for this award recognizes Simms P2 commitment and its accomplishments in reducing energy consumption, waste generation, water use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Recently Simms applied the innovative problem-solving expertise they developed as P2 champions to a different problem: COVID-19 health care providers in need of personal protective equipment (PPE). Simms partnered with Bozeman Health to design PPE that they now produce at their manufacturing facility.

From Fishing Waters to Medical Gown Makers

Simms then looked to their signature product, premium fishing waders, and created a program to provide repurposed waders to MT Fish and Wildlife for personnel to wear while disinfecting public facilities at state parks and fishing access sites. Well done Simms and MSU!
