Description:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, to begin August 2022.

The Department has a particular interest in candidates in the areas of renewable energy, modeling and optimization of energy systems, next-generation controls of energy systems using Industry 4.0 technologies, building energy systems, and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This position is a part of college-wide cluster and supports Clemson University’s two strategic areas of research, namely, Energy, Transportation and Advanced Manufacturing and Sustainable Environments.

The Department and College are committed to fostering interdisciplinary research that can address grand challenges facing our society and innovate through a balance of fundamental and translational research. Collaboration with entities within and outside engineering and science is also highly encouraged. Applicants with exceptional qualifications will also be considered for endowed faculty appointment including appointment at the Full Professor level.

The Department has 32 tenure-track or tenured faculty members actively involved in research, teaching, and service endeavors. More than one-third of the current faculty members have received prestigious early-career grant awards. The Department occupies a modern research and education facility on the main Clemson, SC campus and has an enrollment of over 900 undergraduate and 160 graduate students.

Clemson University is a public land-grant institution currently ranked among the top 30 national public universities by U.S. News and World Report and is classified as a Tier 1 Research Institution by the Carnegie Foundation. The Clemson campus is located between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC near Greenville, SC along the I-85 corridor in the beautiful upstate of South Carolina. Clemson is serviced by the Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP), Atlanta, and Charlotte airports and by amtrack.

The Department also has a new graduate education center in Charleston, SC with activity associated with the world’s most-advanced wind-turbine drivetrain testing facility.

Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field with potential to develop an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research program.

Faculty are expected to actively contribute to the core graduate and undergraduate teaching missions of the Department.

    Job description:

    Method development, IT infrastructure:You actively work on the further development of the IT infrastructure of the Material Digital platform´(www.material-digital.de). You will expand the SimStack workflow environment (www.simstack.de) and work on its integration into the MaterialDigital innovation platform (PMD). This includes the provision of a web interface for the workflow environment and its connection to decentralised data sources, computing capacities and ontologies.

    Application/Publication: In addition to developing documentation material and conducting tutorials, you will support project partners at KIT and national research institutions as well as industry partners in developing and implementing workflows within the PMD infrastructure. In addition, the methods developed in this way will be applied to current problems in cooperation with materials science working groups and published in international journals.

    Expand/Support: You are partly responsible for the IT infrastructure of the Material Digital platform and are to support KIT in the application and implementation of new European/national projects in the digitization of materials research. This applies in particular with regard to the acquisition and implementation of third-party funding projects. Furthermore, you will be responsible for supporting users in the application and further development of the software and workflow solutions provided.

    Personal qualification

    • M.Sc. in Informatics, Research Software Engineering, Data Science or Data Engineering
    • Good knowledge of software/workflow engineering, experience with object-oriented programming (Python, C++), experience with the creation of websites/interfaces (e.g. using Flask), container solutions (Docker, Singularity), databases (PostGres, NoSQL, Blazegraph).
    • Good German and English language skills
