Research

Overview

Our research focuses on innovative materials and technology development, primarily for water and wastewater treatment. Typically, these projects involve both fundamental development of materials platforms and exploratory application to standalone treatment processes, or as enhancements to existing core technologies.  Specific objectives of the Cates Lab include: novel materials for expanding the use of UVC radiation; advancing the use of light and radiation for destruction of aqueous pollutants through catalyst design; and utilizing ultraviolet systems to combat opportunistic pathogens in premise plumbing.
