Dr. Mashrur “Ronnie” Chowdhury, Eugene Douglas Mays Chair in Transportation, Clemson University, and C2M2 Director gave the keynote address for the 2021 SURI Research Symposium. Dr. Chowdhury’s talk, “Leading the Futures with Breakthrough Research” kicked off this year’s symposium, and gave students an overview of exciting research opportunities and future careers in STEM.
SURI stands for Summer Undergraduate Research Institute, and 2021 marks the 12th successful year that Benedict College has offered this 8-week summer program to undergraduate students interested in STEM. This year 45 students from Benedict College and South Carolina State University participated in supervised research that culminated in a virtual presentation of their finds. This program is intended to give undergraduate students research and presenting experience as they work one-on-one with faculty mentors in their chosen field. This year’s student presentations covered a wide range of topics, including Transportation Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Our C2M2 Associate Directors Drs. Gurcan Comert and Judith Mwakalonge along with several other C2M2 researchers mentored 22 students on a variety of transportation related projects.
