Unmanned Aircraft Systems First Bridge Inspection

On March 12th, Dr. Burgett and his team, in collaboration with the SCDOT, conducted their first bridge inspection using an unmanned aerial system (UAS) commonly referred to as a drone.  This project is sponsored jointly by the C2M2 and the SCDOT.  The bridge is located above the Chinquapin Creek making it difficult to inspect and an ideal candidate for this technology.  The team was able to collect data in real time about the health of the bridge not normally available to an inspection crew on the ground.  The data will also be used back in the lab to reconstruct the bridge as a 3D computer model.  Well done “Dr. Drone” and his team!!!
