Methods of chipping mitigation
Chipping is known to accelerate corrosion in FEW joints. This effectively reduces the longevity of the joint. The primary goal of the research related to chipping is to investigate methods that can reduce chipping.
Thermal Assistance
The chip formation or chipping is primarily influenced by the alloy’s strength. Providing thermal assistance reduces the yield strength of aluminum. This improves the flow of aluminum and reduces chipping.
Reduction in chipping is observed for the cases where the temperature of the top sheet is increased. Chipping is eliminated for temperatures above 420°C.
